Learn from Lorenzo de’Medici guest lecturers in the city of Florence.
Enroll in COM courses taught by App State faculty leaders and earn credit towards Gen Ed, Com Major, or Com Minor.

Students will enroll in COM 2124 (3 credits) and/or COM 3152 (3 credits).
This course is aimed at first providing you with the basics of intercultural communication and examining communication within organizational structures. It then encourages you to utilize that knowledge and skills in interacting in another culture. This course is to help you understand the role that communication processes play in the function of organizations.

Debbie Poulos, Senior Lecturer, ([email protected])Â
Debbie Poulos has taught at App State since 1999. She teaches Public Speaking, Nonverbal Communication, Intercultural Communication and Communication Studies Senior Capstone, and is on the Chair Advisory Board for the Communication Department. Prior to teaching, Debbie ran her own Recruiting Company, Rehab Plus, placing Physical Therapist, Occupational Therapist and Speech Pathologist throughout the United States. Debbie received her BS in Communication from Appalachian State University and her MA in Leadership and Higher Education from Appalachian State University. She has extensive international travel experience and has led seven study abroad trips to Mexico, Belize, Costa Rica, and Dominican Republic.
Carey Maple, Senior Lecturer, ([email protected])
Carey Maple has taught at App State since 2015. She teaches Thinking through Communication, Public Speaking and Communication in Organizations, and also heads up the Department’s annual alumni networking event, Spring Forward. Prior to moving to Boone, Carey worked in sales and marketing for CNN, Turner Broadcasting, CNN.com and Starz Encore Group in Atlanta, GA. Carey received her BA in Communication from Mercer University and her MA in Communication from Auburn University.She has extensive international travel experience and has studied abroad in Russia, Finland, England, France, Germany, Belgium and Luxembourg.Â

Students will be housed in shared hotel rooms for program duration: linens and towels, weekly cleaning, internet access and daily breakfast included.Â
In addition, the itinerary includes a group welcome meal, farewell meal, one cooking class meal, one group dinner, and two group lunches while on excursions included. Any meals outside of this will be the student’s responsibility.

Once abroad, experienced on-site Resident Directors are available 24/7, and are extensively trained and ready to enact emergency action plans as necessary.
