Academics in Spain

Learn alongside peers from Spain and other countries at the Universidad de Seville (US) or Universidad Pablo de Olavide (UPO). Take coursework in English, in Spanish, or a combination of English and Spanish, depending on the program you select.

Curriculum Overview:

All students are required to take one 3-credit course with the accompanying Drake faculty member, along with 3-4 courses taught at one of two local universities: the University of Seville or Pablo de Olavide University

  • Host university courses available in both English and Spanish
  • Students will earn 15-18 credits during the semester

Course Information:

Required Course Cultural Diffusion: Values in Art & Architecture taught by School of Education Associate Professor Matthew Hayden, PhD. AOIs – Artistic Literacy; Values & Ethics. Also approved as an Honors elective course.

Course Description – Cultural diffusion is the spread, mixing, and merging of pieces of different cultures, all combining to form singular cultures all over the world. Thus, every culture can be traced to another one [think Back to Bacon, but for cultures]. Nowhere can these shared strands be more obvious, exciting, interesting, shocking, controversial, beautiful, divisive, and unifying than in art and architecture, the values that inform them, and the ethics (or ethos) that frame their creation and acceptance or rejection. This course will use a site-based approach to examining the way that values and ethos inform culture and are expressed through art and architecture. Further, Sevilla’s position in Andalucia will provide a time capsule of the way those cultures and values changed over time as we encounter Roman, “traditional”, Moorish, Gothic, Renaissance, Baroque, and Modern examples infused with the prevailing values and ethos of their times. Through readings, guest lectures from relevant experts, and field work (i.e. visits to sites, galleries, and buildings), students will gain a complex interdisciplinary and integrated understanding of this richly contextualized phenomena that surrounds us daily.

Group Student Visa Services

Students are required to obtain a student visa to participate in a program in Spain that is longer than 90 days.

API can secure group visa appointments for students that fall within the jurisdiction of the Chicago consulate. An API representative will appear in person at the consulate on your behalf to submit your application.

Without a visa service option, students would have to travel to Chicago and appear in person at the consulate to submit their application. We are excited to have this service available for our program for $185.
