This 7-day faculty-led program is an optional add-on to the Spring 2024 course HI387: The Cold War. It will be taught in English and is open to all students; enrollment in the spring course is not required, but encouraged.

Students will explore and experience firsthand the themes and objectives taught during the spring course.

What’s Included

Travel & Transportation

Housing, Meals & Wi-Fi

Housing:

  • Accommodation in a student residencia for program duration in double occupancy rooms
  • Weekly laundry service
  • Linens and towels

Meals:

  • Daily breakfast + one additional meal per day
  • One group welcome meal
  • One group farewell meal
  • Two group lunches in Havana while out on activities
  • One group meal during the day trip

Wi-Fi:

  • Please note that Wi-Fi is not available at most private residencias as Cuba does not yet have the infrastructure to support access in homes.
  • Internet cards can be purchased on-site for access to the public Wi-Fi network at various Wi-Fi hotspots in the neighborhood.

  • Visit the Museo de la Denuncia to learn about US-Cuban relations

Health & Safety

API On-site Staff:

  • An API Program Leader, required in accordance with OFAC regulations, will accompany the group on all API arranged activities, facilitate program logistics, and serve as the faculty leader’s point of contact on the ground.
  • Every Resident Director is thoroughly trained in emergency response and receives ongoing training and support
  • Resident Director will serve as an emergency contact available 24/7

  • Onsite cultural, health, and safety orientation
  • Bilingual Cuban guide/translator for all guided tours, guest lectures, and cultural and academic visits

COURSE & CREDIT DETAILS

Enrollment:

This program is taught in English and open to all students, though students enrolled in HI387: The Cold War during the Spring 2024 semester will be given preference. This trip is not required for those taking HI387, but highly encouraged.

Students not enrolled in the spring course can attend, but will be required to conduct pre and post-trip preparation.

HI387: The Cold War

This course examines the Cold War, the international rivalry between the United States and the Soviet Union that lasted from 1945-1991. We will explore the origins of the Soviet-American conflict, the two countries’ struggle for global influence, and the effects of the Cold War on American and Soviet domestic affairs.

This is a team-taught course and it fulfills the Global Engagement (GLOB) learning outcome.
