        Southwestern PROFESSOR:

        Dr. Carlos de Oro

        Dr. Carlos de Oro Bio

My academic interests include Latin American film, literatures and cultures, with particular emphasis on Colombia. My teaching and research mainly address issues related to the conflicting use of Latin American cultural production as an instrument of resistance and denunciation in situations of socio-political conflict. Within this framework, I plan activities that develop language proficiency and focus on issues of diversity and social justice, preparing students to communicate effectively and successfully, and to understand and interact with people from different backgrounds and cultures. My courses seek to make meaningful connections between academics and the precarity of daily life that impact impoverished and voiceless communities in Latin America.

SPA15-354: Cultures and Communities of Latin America with Dr. Carlos De Oro (4 credits)

Prerequisite: Spanish III or the equivalent

The course offers an exploration of contemporary Argentine culture by delving into some of its rich literary works, cinematic masterpieces, and captivating art and myths. Leveraging the vibrant backdrop of Buenos Aires, students will delve into the symbols, influences, and historical events that have molded Argentina’s identity and culture, all within the heart of the capital city.

This course satisfies the Humanities requirement. It also counts as an advanced Spanish language course for majors and minors (Spanish and LABS).

        AND

SPA 15-414:  Conversation in Context – taught by a local instructor (4 credits)

Prerequisite: Spanish III or the equivalent

This course focuses on conversation, especially useful interactions that students can use while living in Buenos Aires. The purpose of the course is to introduce students to cultural topics in Argentina, and then to use those topics to create class discussions. Students will learn about Argentina, become more conversant in Spanish, and practice their presentational skills.

This course satisfies the Humanities requirement.
